A shift is taking place in the DBMS (Database Management System) landscape according to Gartner. Until recently, the five traditional major players dominated the market, but the journey to the cloud has ensured that the market is changing at a rapid pace. Within a relatively short period of time, AWS has achieved a dominant position among the giants with its cloud offering. IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, SAP and Teradata therefore try to maintain their market share with a cloud-first strategy, driven by the hot breath they feel in their neck, new products are being launched with great speed to keep up. However, in the meantime smart players have emerged who have developed cloud-native solutions. These players can therefore make optimum use of the possibilities of the cloud.

With Bigquery, Google has a cloud-native data warehouse solution in house that has a large connection with developers. Bigquery is an in-memory query execution engine, which integrates perfectly into the Google ecosystem. As part of the Google Cloud Platform, Bigquery also greatly benefits from the reputation of GCP and the Google brand.

Snowflake provides a full SQL Data Warehouse as a Service. This means that you have zero management by definition. So you don’t have to worry about the underlying infrastructure and the button to each other. Because Snowflake follows a multi-cloud strategy, Snowflake is available on AWS, Azure and soon even on GCP. This gives you the flexibility to integrate Snowflake with the rest of your cloud workload at your own discretion.

In a very short time, new players have entered the Magic Quadrant for DBMS. The traditional vendors have difficulty keeping up with these modern cloud solutions. Snowflake was promoted to Leader in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant in January 2019 . This makes Snowflake “one to watch” since Snowflake was founded in 2012 and only came on the market in 2014.
